Welcome to my blog-- bet this caught you by surprise

So yesterday, 12/14, I had my first chemo treatments for my new position-- cancer patient. One minute busy conductor, executive director, music director, entrepenuer-- the next, cancer patient. I think this is my most challenging, and certainly, last job. It is not the one I would have chosen, but here it is nonetheless.

And it is really an easy job so far-- I have yet to feel sick, pretty much my old self but for needing a nap mid-afternoon sometimes. I know that won't last but I am enjoying it for now. My appetite continues to be good and I am indulging myself with some foods that I had forbidden from my diet so I wouldn't die of a coronary before my alotted time. No longer think that is much of a problem.

I plan on spending some time on this blog each day but you have no such obligation. If it gets too clinical or gross, wipe it off your machine. If you get some perverse pleasure out of it, read on.

  2. Perhaps I'm perverted. Can't imagine wiping this off my machine. Thanks for your honesty and bravery in sharing this "adventure". You and Emily are loved.

  3. There is no way to prepare for the adventure you are embarking on, but I want to pass on one source of inspiration I found early on in my journey - Bernie Siegel, M.D. I have yet to find a Bernie Siegel book I didn't like, and I was blessed to stumble across his website on New Year's Eve several years back when my world turned upside down http://www.ecap-online.org/ Bernie weighs in now and then on the discussion board as mdlove. For me it was a source of solace when I didn't know where else to turn. Sending love and prayers your way!

  4. Thanks Dick...this is the first 'blog' attempt and I was successful. See....you are still teaching. I'll be over some time for a beer some deep fried food. In the meantime.....you are in my thoughts and prayers daily. Miracles happen....play on as you can maestro. The only alternative is to be a damned painter.

  5. Poppy! I think this blog is a great idea, I love it. It will be great to be able to get on the computer everyday and hear from you what is going on. Tell Fiely I love his comment. Karin is here, she says "hiiii." Kaylin says hi too, actually more like "gah" and "cooo." We miss you guys! Love, Bear.

  9. Dick,
This is a great way to keep us informed. I hope your first treatment went OK, and I do hope that you have quality time ahead. Peg and I will be keeping you and Emily in our thoughts and prayers, as will so many other folks. We have been talking to so many folks over the last couple days. Please let us know if there is anything that we can do for you and Emily.

  10. Dick: You and Emily were missed at choir tonight, but Sally carried on admirably. She asked Marian to pray and M. responded with a heartfelt petition for you both. Sorry you are having "bad weather" with your chemo already. Gerry said to tell you that he would be available as a chauffeur if you needed one out of town. Our thoughts and prayers continue.
